More Far Side?

Twenty-three books, fifteen years worth of strips and they still put out a calander; The Far Side was an incredibly successful comic (Calvin & Hobbes only has 18 books and 10 years to its credit). No heir has yet to surface in the newspapers (I mean here a comic of similar content and quality, I knowDilbert has certainly surpassed The Far Side in terms of quantity), nor would I expect one given the state of newspapers (Non Sequitur probably comes closest, but it often goes the way of a political cartoon temporarily starts a plot).

So we have webcomics. There are no content rules other than what will drive away readers; politics, religion, sexual references and whatever else is too adult-oriented or touchy for editors. There's no need to grab every reader, more jokes can be dependant on the reader's background. And we have several years of new technology to get material from. The pieces seem to be there, but I can only recall seeing one webcomic that replicated The Far Side well.

The best of the archives. Ten years worth of comics, many hitting the level of The Far Side. It has the puns, the bizarre situations, animals, all the elements from The Far Side. It even managed a near-daily update schedule. A few months ago, I probably could have declared the hunt over with Doctor Fun (It only recently stopped updating).

Zomething Else is interesting, but there isn't that much material up there. It's a Jungle Out There does an excellent job, and I'd say the animals are more recognisable that The Far Side's, however it exclusivly deals with animals (nothing wrong with cute animals). Both update weekly though, growing their archives slowly (not to deride their achievement, I doubt I could last just one year on a weekly schedule).

Updating more often (almost always a good thing), Inside the Box appeared to be a good choice. Except its author seems to have put it on hold (I can't be certain, the page is devoid of information. That's material for another time though). Dirt Flake used to have a number of good ones, but not only is it ended, but the archive is gone at the moment.

If you have FarSide-like ideas often, I hope you find an artist and drop me an e-mail (or even e-mail if I missed a good Far Side equivilent, the spam filter makes my public e-mail account very barren). All that I can think of is "Witch Parking Only, All Others Will Be Toad."
