Time for something different. My previous selections were single jokes or stories that existed to create jokes. Chirault is a serious story. Even better, two stories at once. Stories like one would expect from a novel (a Tolkien or an Asimov, not one from the sequel-a-year authors).
The art work is exceptional (even more so for a frequently-updated webcomic)--Intricate shading and detail rather than simple line-art or a little Photoshop work. Expression in faces, the shadows inherent to the surroundings, the subtle reflections of light, the grays somehow capture it all. Excellent composition handles the remaining details holding the characters apart from busy backgrounds that vanish into the horizon or shadows.
The stories are likewise exceptional; no ending immediately suggests itself. Each page pushes the questions a little further without clarifying. The main characters are talkative--even running close to narration--yet reveal nothing. The two threads are clearly part of the same tale, but nothing suggests how they integrate. It beautifully compliments the artwork with the same quiet detail.
Magic, demons and fairies show up in prominent places yet blend seamlessly into the world. The stories centers around magic, without being driven by it. It's refreshing to see a backdrop that does nothing more than supports its story. The magic sets the scene, but doesn't intrude into the story.
Gems like this are why I keep reading. I don't know what will happen and I need to find out.
