The world needs to slow down. I start writing something relevant, and then I need to rush to keep it so. Wait a month, and the following would be utterly meaningless:
Why even bother with the primaries and general election this year. It's obvious who's going to win; most of the candidates don't have a good presidential name. Look at our recent presidents: all their names end in strong syllables: Bush, Clinton, Regan. Bush vs. Gore was a very close race and both of the candidates were strong single syllables. The great presidents from history follow the same pattern: Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, Truman.
Laugh all you want, but name the presidents whose names end in vowel sounds for me. Monroe makes one, keep going, there's 42 to choose from. Kennedy, only served half a term but I'm not picky, keep going. McKinley? you've already resorted to google haven't you? Three out of 42...barely 7%.
See the effect in action: McCain, who many people don't even believe is a Republican, beat out the vowel-ended names Romney, Huckabee and Giuliani for the Republican nomination.
Not that I'm worried it will be too late to matter. The Republican already have a good consonant-ending candidate. The Democrats are still wary after believing that hair was the key factor.*
On the plus side there's always something new. Case and point: Today's headline was Nader seeking the presidency. The only problem there is all the good "sun continues to rise in the east" variants have been over used. Not that I have any problem with third-party candidates. I'd like a change from the current set up; too much like the collapse of the Roman Republic (someone convince me that Senator Obama isn't going to be Tiberius Gracchus).
* That's what happens when you ignore history. How many presidents have had that wore wigs? How many were going bald?
